Cashtown Inn
Built in 1797 as a stagecoach stop on the turnpike west of Gettysburg, the Cashtown Inn took its name from an early innkeeper who accepted only cash. In late June 1863 it became a Confederate gathering point, serving as headquarters for Generals A. P. Hill, Henry Heth, and John Imboden, and its cellar was pressed into use as a field hospital where surgeons worked through the battle's aftermath. Guests over the years have reported a light knocking on the door when the hallway stands empty, lights and televisions switching on and off, doors that lock by themselves, and the rocking chair in the A. P. Hill room moving on its own. The most repeated tale belongs to travelers who left their rooms only to return and find their suitcases mysteriously packed, as if some unseen attendant were urging them on their way.
