Christ Church Frederica Cemetery
Surrounding one of America's oldest churches, founded in 1736 near Oglethorpe's Fort Frederica, the cemetery at Christ Church holds graves reaching back to the early 1800s beneath a canopy of live oaks draped in Spanish moss. Legend tells of a young woman buried here who carried a lifelong terror of the dark, said to have been seeded by frightening tales from her Caribbean-born nurse. Each night after her death, her devoted husband walked to her grave and set a lit candle upon it, so she would never lie in blackness. Even after he too passed, islanders swore the flickering light still appeared among the stones, a small flame burning for someone long gone. Sightings faded only after a brick wall rose along Frederica Road and modern spotlights washed over the grounds, sealing the glow away behind the churchyard gates.
