Fox Theatre

Opened on Christmas Day 1929 — two months after the stock market crash — the Fox began as a Shriners' temple before movie magnate William Fox leased it as a lavish movie palace, its Moorish minarets and Egyptian motifs making it a National Historic Landmark and the last surviving movie palace in Atlanta. From its opening the building housed a working hospital room staffed by a registered nurse, and visitors and staff still speak of a spirit called "Mary" who lingers in its doorway among the 1920s medical furniture. Backstage, an old elevator is said to travel on its own between floors, stopping where no one has called it, a story long tied to the late companion of a former theatre manager. Crew members report footsteps, sudden cold spots, and shadowy figures crossing the deserted stage when the 4,665-seat auditorium sits empty and dark.
