Hawthorne Hotel

Opened in 1925 and named for Salem's own Nathaniel Hawthorne, this six-story Colonial Revival hotel on Washington Square has long been the city's grand address, said to stand near land once tied to the witch-trial accused Bridget Bishop. Guests on the sixth floor describe a woman in a long white dress drifting the corridor and returning to room 612, sometimes felt as a cold hand or a tug at the hair. In room 325, the most-requested haunt, people report a child crying in the night, faucets and lights that switch on by themselves, and the sense of being watched. The reputation drew the SyFy series Ghost Hunters to investigate in 2007, and the hotel has repeatedly ranked among America's most haunted. Some staff even claim to catch the faint smell of apples, as if from an orchard that no longer exists.
