Hill-Physick House
This freestanding 1786 Federal mansion in Society Hill was the home of Dr. Philip Syng Physick, the 'Father of American Surgery,' who lived and practiced here until his death in 1837. Physick treated patients during the era's epidemics and conducted autopsies in the basement, and the property's hauntings are linked to grief and loss. The spirit reported most often is his estranged wife, Elizabeth Emlen Physick, from whom he separated in 1815. Her misty figure is said to appear on the front steps as if knocking to be let in, and in the walled garden where a tree she loved once stood before it was cut down near the end of her life, where she appears mournful. Visitors and staff also describe cold spots, the sense of being watched, and phantom crying inside the house. Now operated as a museum by the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks, it features on local ghost tours for these reports.
