Linden Row Inn

Linden Row Inn occupies seven Greek Revival row houses built in the mid-1800s on a downtown block layered with Edgar Allan Poe history. The garden behind the houses is widely identified as the enchanted garden of Poe's childhood, where the young writer played and is said to have first courted his early love, Elmira Royster; many believe it inspired imagery in his poem 'To Helen,' and the same linden trees still shade the grounds. Guests and staff have long reported that Poe's spirit seems to linger in the antique-filled parlor suites, and the inn leans into a reputation for unexplained encounters in its historic rooms. Local lore also tells of a ghost said to be Poe's mother, the actress Eliza Poe, though the inn's director notes the houses postdate her 1811 death, a reminder that the strongest documented thread here is Poe's own deep, real connection to the ground the inn stands on.
