Oconee Hill Cemetery
Established in the 1850s on the banks of the North Oconee River beside what is now the University of Georgia's Sanford Stadium, Oconee Hill is regarded as one of the finest Victorian-era cemeteries in the South and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. When the original grounds filled, the trustees acquired land across the river and, around 1899, spanned the water with a rare iron through-truss bridge to link the old and new sections. Local lore, retold in the University's student paper as far back as the 1970s, holds that a buggy driver and his horse once crossed that bridge and never left. On the night of a full moon, those who stand beneath the span are said to hear hoofbeats and the rattle of an approaching carriage swell across the bridge, then fade slowly into silence on the far bank.
