Peyton Randolph House

Built around 1715 and home to Peyton Randolph, first president of the Continental Congress, this house is routinely called one of the most haunted in America. Numerous deaths are tied to the property over its history, including wounded soldiers who died when the home served as a hospital and a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. The most-told tale dates to 1824, when the Marquis de Lafayette, lodging here, reportedly felt an unseen hand push his shoulder as he crossed the threshold. Modern visitors and Colonial Williamsburg interpreters report disembodied voices, objects moving on their own, and unseen hands touching or shoving people, sometimes near the staircase. The companion book 'Colonial Williamsburg Hauntings' names the most active spirits as the Peachy children, Sally and Mary, along with the grieving figure of Mary Monro. The house is a National Historic Landmark and an active Colonial Williamsburg museum site.
