Poogan's Porch

Built as a private Victorian home in the late 1880s, the house at 72 Queen Street opened as Poogan's Porch in 1976, named for a neighborhood dog who lingered as its self-appointed greeter until his death in 1979. Decades earlier the home belonged to Zoe St. Amand, a local schoolteacher who lived there with her sister Elizabeth; when Elizabeth died in 1945, Zoe's mind unraveled, and she spent her final years in care before dying in 1954. Staff and diners since report an elderly woman in a long black dress glimpsed in the second-floor window and drifting through the dining rooms, along with unexplained footsteps, moving objects, and a reflection that surfaces in mirrors. Many say she is still searching the rooms for the sister she never stopped grieving.
