Proctor's Ledge

For more than three centuries the exact spot where Salem hanged its accused witches was lost to legend, presumed to be the summit of Gallows Hill. In January 2016, the University of Virginia's Gallows Hill Project confirmed the true site as Proctor's Ledge, a wooded outcrop at the base of the hill where nineteen innocent people were executed in 1692, and the city dedicated a quiet semicircular memorial there in 2017. Visitors who linger among the engraved names describe a heavy, sorrowful weight in the air, sudden cold spots, and faint cries carried on the wind. Local legend tells of a mournful Lady in White who drifts across the ledge at dusk, glimpsed for only a moment before she vanishes. Whether grief or something lingering, the ground here is said to remember what was done upon it.
