Rose Hill at Lockerly Arboretum

Daniel Reese Tucker bought the property in 1851, then rebuilt it after fire into the columned Greek Revival mansion completed in 1852, now the centerpiece of the 50-acre Lockerly Arboretum. The house passed to his daughter Emma Tucker Sibley, and it is her spirit that visitors say never truly left. During a 1950s restoration, carpenters and painters reported a young woman in a long white gown who smiled in apparent approval before vanishing, and she is still most often felt in the front left bedroom on the second floor. One overnight guest in 1994 fled the house half-dressed after a young lady seemed to climb into his bed, and another in 1995 was scolded by a disembodied voice: "You shouldn't be sleeping in my room." Heavy pocket doors slam in empty halls and turned-down covers appear on made beds, as if Emma is still keeping house.
