Sans Souci
Built in 1896 on the millionaires' retreat of Jekyll Island, Sans Souci was one of the first condominium-style apartment buildings in America, its six units reserved for a handful of Club founders including financier J.P. Morgan. Morgan favored the porch and balcony of his middle-floor apartment, where he would relax in the early morning, watching the Jekyll River and puffing on his beloved cigars. Long after his death, guests and staff in the historic cottage report being startled by the pungent, inescapable smell of cigar smoke drifting through rooms and along the balcony, despite indoor smoking having been banned for years. Paranormal enthusiasts attribute the phantom scent to the residual presence of the cigar-chomping tycoon, still lingering over the river he loved.
