Taylor-Grady House
Built in the mid-1840s by Irish immigrant and planter Robert Taylor, this stately Greek Revival home was purchased in 1863 by Major William S. Grady, whose son Henry would later rise to national fame as the orator of the "New South." Major Grady never came home from the war; he was mortally wounded near Petersburg, Virginia, and died in 1864. Ever since, his spirit is said to have returned to the family house on Prince Avenue, and visitors over the generations have reported strange occurrences within its walls. Those who tell the stories describe shadowy figures of Civil War soldiers, and the pale shape of a bride lingering in the upstairs rooms. The reputation runs deep enough that Athens-Clarke County itself sanctioned a paranormal investigation of the National Historic Landmark in 2022.
