Basilica of St. Lawrence
Completed in 1909, this Catholic basilica is famous for its self-supporting tile dome, designed by Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino, who supplied the materials and oversaw construction using his patented tile-and-mortar system. Guastavino died in 1908, before completion; he is entombed in a crypt within the church he helped build, alongside family members. The basilica is said to be haunted by its creator. Visitors and staff describe cold spots in warm rooms, lights flickering with no one near the switches, and footsteps echoing through the dome and sacristy when the building is locked and empty. More than one person has reported a shadowy figure, a man in dark clothing, near the chapel that holds Guastavino's tomb, vanishing before he can be seen clearly. Others claim to hear strange voices or distant organ music, as though someone still plays from somewhere beyond. A former priest is also said to linger.
