Asheville Masonic Temple
Completed in 1915, the Asheville Masonic Temple is a downtown landmark that today doubles as a performance and event venue, and it is a recurring stop on the city's downtown ghost tours. Its lore centers on the basement. Asheville Citizen articles from 1918 confirm the temple housed patients during the Spanish flu outbreak, and the persistent claim is that a number of victims died there. Guides and visitors describe cold spots, shadow figures, and unexplained sounds in the basement and back stairwells; one paranormal investigator reported seeing a full-bodied apparition there after an event. The original 'Haunted Asheville' tour, created by paranormal author Joshua P. Warren, begins in the alley behind the temple and ends in the basement, which houses Warren's museum of local lore. As a working Masonic hall with restricted interior access, much of its reputation rests on the tour tradition and the documented flu-era history.
