Big Nose Kate's Saloon
Now named for Doc Holliday's companion Mary Big Nose Kate Haroney, this Allen Street saloon began as the Grand Hotel, which opened in September 1880 and lodged Tombstone's elite during the silver boom. Its cool basement reportedly doubled as storage for both liquor and corpses awaiting burial when men died faster than graves could be dug. The signature ghost is The Swamper, a janitor who lived in the basement, tended the building, and is said to appear in photographs and fleeting glimpses near the cellar stairs. Staff and guests report disembodied footsteps and moaning from the empty basement, cold spots, lights and doors operating on their own, silverware sliding off tables, and the mannequins shifting position. Some visitors have reported feeling pushed on the stairs. It runs today as a working saloon and restaurant, often called Tombstone's oldest continuously operating bar, and is a frequent paranormal-tour stop.
