Burke Mansion

Built in 1887 for businessman Thomas C. Burke and long regarded as one of the finest Queen Anne houses in the country, the mansion anchors Macon's historic district with its distinctive round tower and second-floor turret room. Locals have long whispered that a woman in a nun's habit drifts through that tower room, believed to be Burke's sister Maggie, who took her vows as Sister Mary Ligouri at Mount de Sales Academy in 1885. Overnight guests and investigators report more than the nun alone: the spirit of a little girl said to play with a red ball on the second floor, a small boy, and an adult man and woman who linger in the storied Dogwood and John Gresham rooms. Visitors describe cold pockets, the sense of being watched, and footsteps in halls that should be empty, the past employees and family of the house seemingly never having left. The tower's lone window still draws the eye after dark, as if someone in a dark veil is waiting just inside the glass.
