House · Macon, GA

Cannonball House

Built in 1853 as a Greek Revival townhouse for Judge Asa Holt, the home earned its name on July 30, 1864, when a Union cannonball fired during General Stoneman's raid skipped off the sidewalk, struck a front column, tore through the parlor, and came to rest in the interior hallway without exploding or killing anyone. Now a museum of antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction artifacts, it appears on nearly every haunted history tour in Macon. Visitors and staff report phantom footsteps and shadowy figures said to linger from the war years, and a playful spirit known as "Matt" — a ghost child whose squeaky-toy sounds are heard in the old servants' quarters and kitchen. Guides on the October "Haunts and History on the Hill" tours recount the stories where the past, quite literally, came crashing through the walls.
