Chinese Graveyard (Loma China Cemetery)

Tucked off South Zarzamora Street on the city's far south side near Texas A&M University-San Antonio, this small overgrown family cemetery, also called the Loma China Cemetery and the Guzman Burial Ground, is the subject of one of San Antonio's most enduring ghost legends. As told by members of the Guzman family that owns the land, a young relative secretly courted a Chinese woman his family forbade him to see; one night, riding to meet her, he and his horse were killed by lightning and buried in the family plot. Grief-stricken, his lover took her own life at his grave and was buried beside him. Her spirit is said to appear at night in various forms, including a white mist, while the man is sometimes seen riding his horse. Local lore holds that if you park facing the cemetery at night, cut the engine, and flash your headlights five times, you may hear voices. The site is private property.
