Schilo's Delicatessen
Schilo's, a German-Texan deli founded by 'Papa' Fritz Schilo in 1917 and at its downtown location since 1942, is the oldest operating restaurant in San Antonio, famous for its house-made root beer, split pea soup, and Reuben sandwiches. The current building was previously a currency-exchange bank, and the original bank vault now serves as the deli's walk-in cooler. Long-tenured staff believe the place is haunted. The restaurant's general manager has gone on record with local news describing paranormal encounters at work, and employees report eerie occurrences and a lingering presence after hours in the century-old space. KENS 5 documented the staff accounts in a feature on the historic deli, and KSAT included Schilo's in a segment on the oldest and reportedly haunted restaurants in San Antonio.
