East Bay Inn
Edward Padelford raised this restrained brick building with its cast-iron façade in 1852, when it stood among the cotton warehouses lining Savannah's bluff above the river. Over the decades the walls held a steam bakery, foreign consuls, a third-floor lodge hall, and the Columbia Drug Company, before the long-vacant structure was reborn as the East Bay Inn in 1984. Guests and staff speak of Charlie, a workman said to have plunged to his death from a third-story window while cleaning what is now Room 325. He lingers there still, a quiet figure in a dark suit and top hat who fades when looked upon directly. By night his heavy footsteps creak along the third-floor halls, lights flicker, small belongings vanish, and doorknobs rattle as he tests each room for one left carelessly unlocked.
