Fort Mifflin

Fort Mifflin, on the Delaware River, was nearly destroyed during the 1777 Siege of Fort Mifflin, when its garrison absorbed one of the heaviest bombardments of the Revolutionary War before withdrawing. Its most famous specter is the Screaming Woman, identified in lore as Elizabeth Pratt, an officer's wife said to have died of yellow fever in 1803 after losing her children to the same disease. Her shrieks, reportedly heard from the officers' quarters, have been loud enough that startled neighbors phoned police, who arrived to find the fort empty. Other reported figures include the Faceless Man seen in the blacksmith shop, a lamplighter who walks the grounds, and a 'Tour Guide' apparition that has reportedly addressed visitors before vanishing. Disembodied voices, footsteps and cannon-like sounds are frequently logged in the casemates and powder magazine. Numerous paranormal teams have investigated, and the fort openly hosts overnight ghost-hunt programs that lean on this long-documented reputation.
