Knoll-Willows Open Space

This downtown open space, with a trailhead behind Town Hall and across from the Stanley Hotel, is the modern setting for Estes Park's most famous fireside legend: the Blue Mist. It springs from prospector William Clyde "Miner Bill" Currence, who arrived in the area in 1883 and staked claims near Mount Chapin in what is now Rocky Mountain National Park. Bill grew obsessed with a glowing blue mist he said appeared on cloudy nights near his cabins, leaving three-toed claw marks gouged into the snow and tree trunks. When citizens found him, he and his dog lay dead, with three-toed tracks still visible in the snow nearby. The reclusive miner's tale became valley lore, preserved in print and retold in Estes Park campfire programs. Local storytelling holds that on certain nights a cold blue haze still creeps across the Knoll-Willows trailhead, where the three-toed figure of the legend is said to stir.
