Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art

A block off Marietta Square, the museum occupies a Greek Revival building raised in 1909 to serve as the town's post office, a role it held until 1963 before housing the Cobb County library and finally becoming a fine arts museum in 1990. Staff and patrons have long spoken of Catherine, a playful spirit said to linger in the upstairs storage area, sometimes tied in local lore to the wife of the building's first postmaster, said to wait for a husband who never returns. Her mischief is gentle rather than menacing: gallery spotlights found tilted toward the ceiling overnight, unexplained bangs, and the rope partition to the office strewn across the floor. An elevator repairman is among those who claimed to have glimpsed her, and volunteers famously dismissed a paranormal team's report of a "vengeful presence," insisting their ghost was far too playful for that. Catherine is counted among Marietta's most enduring apparitions, attested across the years rather than conjured for any single tour.
