Statue of Mary Meinert
In St. James Episcopal Cemetery in Marietta rests Marion "Mary" Meinert, who died in 1898 at the age of 34 from a lung ailment, most likely tuberculosis, just weeks after giving birth to twin daughters. Her obituary remembered her as one of the most beloved and charitable women in town, and her grieving family raised a marble monument depicting a mother cradling two infants in her arms — the twins who entered the world as their mother left it. Legend has since claimed the statue weeps for her lost children, with visitors reporting the sound of a woman crying in the dark, tears said to roll down the figure's marble face, and the unsettling sense that the two babies have shifted positions in her arms. The boldest are told to circle the memorial and ask aloud how her children died, and the grieving mother will answer with her tears.
