The Marshall House
The Marshall House stands on Broughton Street in Savannah's historic district, a brick hotel built in 1851 by Mary Marshall and ranked among the oldest in the city. Its long iron-railed verandas overlook the downtown bustle, but the building's past runs darker than its genteel facade suggests.
It served as a hospital during yellow fever epidemics, and during the Civil War it was commandeered as a Union hospital under Sherman's 1864 occupation, where by some accounts amputations were performed on wounded soldiers. After decades of decline the hotel was restored and reopened in 1999.
Guests today report footsteps echoing down empty halls, faucets that turn themselves on, and the faint cries of wounded men. A few describe figures in period clothing crossing the lobby before vanishing into the old brick quiet.
