Restaurant 1796 at The Myrtles Plantation

Restaurant 1796 sits on the grounds of the Myrtles Plantation, named for the year General David Bradford built the main house. It opened in February 2019 in a newly constructed building raised on the site of the former Carriage House Restaurant, which burned in a 2017 fire; the structure stands a stone's throw from the famously haunted main house. Diners eat within the same estate where the ghost of Chloe, the slain plantation agent William Winter, and a phantom child are reported. The restaurant centers on a roughly 10-foot wood-fired hearth and serves Southern fare made from local produce. Guests eating and staying on the grounds have described unexplained footsteps, cold spots, objects moving, and figures captured in photographs taken on the property. Because it shares the address and lore of one of the country's most famously haunted plantations, dining here puts visitors at the heart of the Myrtles' reputed activity.
