The Myrtles Plantation
Built circa 1796 by General David Bradford and now a bed-and-breakfast, the Myrtles is routinely called one of America's most haunted homes. Its best-known ghost is Chloe, an enslaved woman said to wear a green turban hiding a severed ear; legend claims she poisoned a family's children with an oleander cake. Historians note the Chloe tale only emerged in the 1950s and the children actually died of yellow fever. A better-documented death is that of William Winter, a plantation agent shot on the side gallery in January 1871. Folklore says his ghostly footsteps climb the staircase and stop at the seventeenth step, where he supposedly died in his wife's arms. Guests and tour visitors report a girl peering in windows, a phantom piano, footprints, and apparitions in mirrors. The plantation offers daytime historic tours and evening ghost tours.
