Southern Oaks Inn

Charles P. Ray built the gracious oak-shaded home now known as the Ray-Cheek House in 1918, and it was here, in an upstairs room, that he drew his last breath. Over the following century the property passed through many lives — private residence, retirement home, bed and breakfast, wedding venue, and restaurant — but Ray, it is said, never truly left. Guests and staff have glimpsed the apparitions of both a man and a woman drifting through the rooms, and heard slow, deliberate footsteps crossing empty floors overhead. Workers tell of loaves of bread flung across the kitchen and furniture quietly rearranged overnight, mischief the current owners attribute to a ghost who seems to enjoy a good practical joke.
