The Strand Theater

The Strand opened on Front Street in 1941 as a movie house, sat vacant through the 1970s, and was bought in 1982 by the Swamp Fox Players, the community troupe that still stages live theater there. Performers and crew describe footsteps pacing the empty balcony when no one is upstairs, a common report in the old auditorium. The activity reportedly intensified during a run of a locally themed production drawing on Georgetown's ghost tales: staff began noticing sudden cold spots and faint whispers drifting from the backstage area. The backstage phenomena later ceased, while the balcony footsteps continued. No single named spirit is attached to the building; the reports are recurring sensory phenomena rather than a documented identity. The Strand appears in regional haunted-place listings and Georgetown ghost-tour material, a fixture among the historic district's reputed haunts and a working venue visitors can still attend.
