The Wren's Nest
Built around 1870 as a farmhouse and later wrapped in ornate Queen Anne flourishes, the Wren's Nest was home to journalist Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus tales, from 1881 until his death in 1908. Today it stands in Atlanta's West End as the city's oldest house museum and a National Historic Landmark. Visitors and staff have long reported that Harris never quite left, describing a portly figure in old-fashioned clothing who settles into his old rocking chair and drifts through the halls. Two small boys, thought to be his grandsons Pierre and Charles who died in infancy on the property, are said to play on the staircase and in the yard, while a woman resembling a former housekeeper named Chloe is glimpsed peering through the parlor curtains. Paranormal investigators have recorded unexplained knocking and whispers in the house, though the museum's own director remains gently skeptical.
