1905 Basin Park Hotel
Opened July 1, 1905, the seven-story Basin Park rises against a limestone bluff downtown, built on the site of the earlier Perry House. Its most famous ghost is a cowboy in a hat and white canvas duster with a six-shooter on his hip, said to walk through the third-floor walls asking startled guests whether they've seen his horse. Local lore identifies him as cattle baron John Chisum, the 'King of the Pecos,' who reportedly died on Christmas Eve 1884 in what is now Room 310. Rooms 307, 308, and 310 are the most active, with guests also reporting a translucent blonde woman and a little girl. Some describe the lingering scent of livestock with no animals present. In the top-floor Barefoot Ballroom, where a 1930s speakeasy and illegal gambling parlor once ran, visitors describe human-shaped shadows and unexplained faces.
