Basin Spring Park

The small stone-walled park at the heart of downtown surrounds Basin Spring, the mineral spring that founded Eureka Springs in 1879. Long before the town existed, Native peoples are said to have revered these waters as sacred and healing, and that reputation later drew thousands of Victorian-era invalids who came seeking cures, many of whom never recovered. Ghost-tour lore holds that the springs themselves hold onto the energy of all that hope and heartbreak and echo it back as apparitions and unexplained sensations. Visitors and guides report shadowy human-shaped figures, floating orbs, and cold, watched feelings around the spring enclosure and the adjacent bluff, which abuts the famously haunted Basin Park Hotel directly across the street. The park sits at the literal and spiritual center of the haunted historic district and is a recurring stop on the town's night tours.
