Allison Building

Richard E. Allison raised this three-story commercial block on West Lamar Street in 1907, filling its high-ceilinged floors with a furniture store and a first-floor pharmacy during the boom years of downtown Americus. The good times did not last; by the early 1930s the 1929 market crash had stripped Allison of nearly everything he had built, and on April 6, 1932, he is said to have taken his own life. Townsfolk have whispered ever since that the building never quite let him go. On overcast afternoons, passersby claim to catch a pale face watching from the upper windows, a careworn man surveying the storefront he could not save. Even after its grand restoration into apartments and retail space, the legend lingers in the wavy old glass.
