Windsor Hotel

Opened in 1892, the Windsor Hotel rose over downtown Americus as a red-brick Victorian palace of towers, balconies, and a three-story atrium lobby, drawing politicians and celebrities fleeing northern winters. Local legend holds that a housekeeper named Emily Mae once argued with her lover in a third-floor hallway, her small daughter Emma clinging to her hand, until he shoved her into what he believed was a waiting elevator — but the shaft stood empty, and mother and child fell three stories to their deaths. Guests still report a child's footsteps racing down the third-floor corridor, a woman's reflection in a long black dress glimpsed in an upstairs mirror, and Room 333 stirring restless in the small hours. Staff also speak of a former doorman who lingers in the lobby, forever welcoming arrivals to a stay he never finished.
