Helen's Bridge

This quarried-stone arch on Beaucatcher Mountain was built in 1909 to carry a carriage road to the Zealandia mansion. Asheville's most enduring ghost legend says a woman named Helen, who lived near the mansion, lost her young daughter in a fire and, overcome with grief, hanged herself from the bridge. Her spirit is said to appear when her name is called three times. People who try to summon her report flickering headlights, dead car batteries, chilling sensations, and engines that won't start as they try to leave; some claim to have seen a woman in white near the span or heard whispers in the trees. Historians note no record confirms Helen's existence, the fire, or any death there, so the tale lives as folklore. The bridge appears in Thomas Wolfe's 'Look Homeward, Angel,' and the City of Asheville recounts the legend on its own website.
