Biltmore Estate

George Vanderbilt's 250-room chateau, completed in 1895 and now a house museum, has accumulated a body of ghost lore reported on regional tours and in local guides. The two figures most often named are George Vanderbilt and his wife Edith. After George died in 1914, Edith was said to sit by a library fireplace believing she could speak with him; visitors today report a man resembling George in the grand Library and a woman's voice calling his name through the room. Staff describe the sounds of a party drifting through the Banquet Hall when it is empty and the smell of cigar smoke despite a smoking ban. The unused basement swimming pool draws the eeriest accounts: phantom splashing, disembodied laughter, and a figure seen near the water. Biltmore officials have not endorsed the claims, and no death at the pool is documented, but the stories are widely recounted.
