Bonaventure Cemetery
Bonaventure is Savannah's most beautiful burial ground, a wooded bluff on the Wilmington River laid out across the grounds of the original Bonaventure Plantation, draped in live oaks and Spanish moss. It opened in 1846 as the private Evergreen Cemetery before the City of Savannah purchased it in 1907, expanding the Victorian-style grounds with their curving paths and grassy lots.
Its most beloved resident is Gracie Watson, who died of pneumonia in 1889 at age six; her grieving father, a hotel manager, marked the grave with a statue carved so lifelike it still stops visitors cold. People claim to hear a little girl's laughter drifting through the oaks, and say that if you take any of the coins and small gifts left at her feet, she will follow you home until they are returned.
