Old Candler Hospital

Standing on Drayton Street across from Forsyth Park, the Old Candler Hospital is counted as the oldest hospital in Georgia, tracing its origins to the early nineteenth century when it opened as a poorhouse and almshouse for the city's destitute. Its brick walls later took in the sick and dying through Savannah's brutal yellow-fever epidemics, and the dead were carried out of sight through brick tunnels that ran beneath the building, sparing the living the sight of the bodies.

In the yard stands a sprawling live oak that locals still call the hanging tree. Long abandoned, the building keeps a heavy reputation in Savannah ghost lore: visitors who pass after dark describe low moans drifting up from the old morgue tunnels and shadowy figures that seem to stand watching from the empty upper windows.
