The Pirates' House

The Pirates' House sits a few blocks east of General Oglethorpe's 1733 landing site in Savannah, on the grounds of the old Trustees' Garden near the wharf. It opened in 1753 as an inn for seafarers and soon became a meeting point for sailors and pirates putting in from the Seven Seas.

The story goes that drinking men were drugged and dragged through tunnels beneath the floor to waiting ships, shanghaied out to sea and never seen again. The cellar still holds the rumored entrance to those passages, low and brick-lined.

Today the warren of dim, low-ceilinged rooms serves diners where the hard crowd once gathered, and staff and guests report cold drafts, the clink of unseen glasses, and the sense of company that never quite shipped out.
