Isaiah Davenport House
Built in 1820 on the northwest corner of Columbia Square, the Isaiah Davenport House is a Federal-style brick residence raised by its namesake, a New England master builder, as both a family home and a showcase of his craft. After Davenport's death the house declined into a rundown rooming house, and by 1955 it faced the wrecking ball.
A group of Savannah women bought it to stop the demolition, founding the Historic Savannah Foundation and launching one of the city's first preservation efforts. Today staff and visitors describe a playful spirit, believed to be a child, who tugs at clothing and nudges small objects out of place, while a phantom cat is said to brush against ankles on the stairs before slipping out of sight.
