Heritage Hall

Built in 1811 and later transformed into a Greek Revival showpiece by Dr. Elijah Evans Jones, a prominent Madison physician, Heritage Hall watched generations of one family live and die within its columned walls. At least four people drew their last breath inside the home, including, by local lore, a young wife said to have died in the master bedroom while giving birth, the room now known simply as the Ghost Room. Visitors and docents describe an apparition lingering at the bedside, the faint cries of an infant, and a stain on the fireplace that resembles a woman cradling a baby. Upstairs, guests have reported the unmistakable sound of children laughing in empty rooms, and a Victorian mourning wreath woven from human hair still hangs as a reminder of the house's intimacy with death. Today it is Madison's most-visited attraction, preserved by the Morgan County Historical Society, where the line between history and haunting has never quite settled.
