Madison Welcome Center

Built in 1887 to serve as Madison's city hall and firehouse, back when fire engines were still drawn by horse and buggy, the building kept its fire pole standing in the hallway long after the last horses were stabled and the new city hall rose in the 1930s. Today it greets travelers as the Madison-Morgan County Welcome Center, but more than one staff member from the visitors bureau has heard footsteps moving across the empty floor above them, most often as evening draws in. The presence is felt strongest at nightfall, and some have packed up and left before dark rather than stay alone with it. Stranger still, after the staff lock the doors and switch off every light for the night, they return in the morning to find the light in the men's bathroom burning. One visitor who claimed sensitivity to such things described a benign male spirit who simply wanted to be acknowledged, and to this day some employees announce themselves when they arrive and say goodbye when they leave, just in case someone unseen is listening.
