Hotel Macomber
Built in 1916, this grand shingle-style hotel on Beach Avenue is best known for the "Trunk Lady" of Room 10. The spirit is identified as Irene Wright, an unmarried woman who summered at the hotel in the mid-20th century and favored Room 10, arriving each season with a large steamer trunk. Guests in that room report banging on the door, slamming bathroom doors, dresser drawers opening and closing on their own, lights flickering, and the sound of a trunk being dragged down the hall, with activity said to peak in June and November. Wright, who wore heavy perfume and is thought to have died in the 1970s, is the hotel's signature ghost story. CapeMay.com's "The Ghosts of the Hotel Macomber" and Haunted Rooms America both document the accounts in detail.
