Washington Inn
Housed in an 1840 former plantation residence and now one of Cape May's most acclaimed restaurants and wine bars, the Washington Inn is said to be haunted by a young girl the staff named Elizabeth. Servers report hearing a child's voice calling them by name when they are alone in the dining room or kitchen, and feeling someone brush past them. In one widely retold account, a photograph taken at an enclosed-porch tea party showed a young girl reflected in a glass door, even though no one had been standing there when the picture was taken; the figure appeared only when the film was developed. Cape May Magazine's "Restless Spirits" feature and CapeMay.com both document the accounts, with activity reported to spike during remodeling work on the historic building.
