Orange Hall

Completed in 1838 for Presbyterian minister Reverend Horace Pratt and his father-in-law John Wood, Orange Hall rose as one of Georgia's finest temple-form Greek Revival houses, its Doric portico shaded by the orange trees that gave it a name. The family knew early grief: Pratt's wife Jane died in 1829, and his young daughter Jane was carried off by yellow fever, her body laid to rest before the great house was ever finished. Today visitors and tour-goers report that little Jane's playful spirit never left — dolls and hats shift on their own in the upstairs bedrooms, and figures are glimpsed at the windows where she once watched the street. Voices captured on recorders and the lingering presence of the Reverend himself round out the hauntings that have made the cultural center a fixture of St. Marys ghost lore.
