St. Paul's Episcopal Church
St. Paul's congregation was established in 1832 by John Fleming, a founding figure of Key West, on land donated after his death by his widow; the present building is the fourth on the site after fires and hurricanes destroyed earlier structures. The grounds held an early churchyard beside the island's original burial area. Visitors walking the property report shadow figures that vanish when approached, and photographs that show orbs, mists, or occasionally human-like figures. The most reported apparition is a man in 19th-century dress appearing as a flimsy white vapor, believed by some to be Fleming himself, who seems upset, possibly because his grave was disturbed during repeated reconstructions. Another spirit is described as a sea captain who appears to enjoy frightening visitors, and a third is tied to a man said to have driven pirates from Key West, near whose grave sudden violent winds are reported. The church is a regular stop on Key West ghost walks.
