Tift Theatre
The Tift Theatre has anchored downtown Tifton's Main Street for generations, a single-screen movie house turned community stage where the lights still come up on local productions. Legend traces its resident spirit to 1947, when a young Irwin County couple quarreled and parted; the heartbroken man asked to reconcile that Saturday at the theatre, only to be killed in a car wreck on his way to keep the date.
They say his spirit arrived anyway and never left, still waiting in the dark for a girlfriend who would never come. Staff blame him for lights snapping on in a locked, switched-off auditorium and for objects that wander and reappear where they don't belong.
One longtime director had no doubt — "a friendly ghost," she called him, the kind you feel rather than fear.
