Andrew Low House
Built in the 1840s at 329 Abercorn Street on Lafayette Square, in Savannah's National Historic Landmark District, the Andrew Low House was home to a young Scottish immigrant who became one of Georgia's wealthiest cotton merchants. It later sheltered his daughter-in-law, Juliette Gordon Low, who lived here in the early years of the Girl Scouts she founded.
In its day it received guests like Robert E. Lee and the English writer William Makepeace Thackeray; its visitors now tend to be quieter. Staff report phantom footsteps along the halls, a presence in the dining room, and the faint sound of a woman weeping in rooms shadowed by the family's many losses, the kind of grand old house where the silver and the silence both seem to hold their breath.
