Hamilton-Turner Inn
Built in 1873 at 330 Abercorn Street, this Second Empire mansion was home to Samuel Pugh Hamilton, the silver and cotton merchant locals called "the Lord of Lafayette Square." Its mansard roof and Connecticut limestone made it the grandest house on the square, and Hamilton's ties to the Brush Electric Light & Power Company brought lights to its salon in 1883, said to be the first home in Savannah with electricity. The mansion survived the great fire of 1898 and later found a second life in John Berendt's "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Today guests report the sharp crack of billiard balls from a room that holds no table, and footsteps pacing the floor above them.
A uniformed caretaker is said to appear at an upper window, still keeping watch long after closing.
